Message from the Board – Joe Watts, President

The Folly of Clinging

The little boy walked slowly into the room where his mother was sitting at her desk writing. She glanced down at him and saw that he was carrying a very precious vase that her grandmother had given her. Almost absentmindedly she said to him, “Robert, go put the vase down before you drop it and break it.”

“I can’t,” he replied, “I can’t my hand out.”

“Of course, you can,” she said, “you got it down there.”

He said, “I know, mom, but it won’t come out.” The neck of the vase was very narrow and his hand had fit it neatly inside and it was now up to his wrist. He continued to insist that he could not get it out. Growing a little concerned, his mother called out to his dad.

Dad calmly took control and began gently pulling the arm trying to extract the hand from the vase. He tried loosening it up with soapy water. Still nothing. He then got some vegetable oil from the kitchen and poured it around the wrist and let it seep into the vase. He wiggled it some. It still did not budge.

“I give up,” the dad said in desperation. “I’d give a dollar right now to know how to get it out.”

“Really?” little Robert exclaimed. Then they heard a clinking sound and his hand slid right out of the vase. They turned the vase upside down and a penny plopped out. “What’s this?” they said in unison.

“Oh, that’s the penny I put inside. I wanted to get it out so I was clutching it in my hand. But when I heard Dad say he would give a dollar to have the vase free, I let go.”

How often do we cling to things when they are nothing in comparison to what could be ours?

New and Established Residents

Are you a new resident to Carolina Shores or just want to know more about our Deed of Restrictions (DOR) and the Rules and Regulations (R&R)? An informational meeting concerning the DOR and R&R will be held on March 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the POA clubhouse. All residents, especially those new to the community are encouraged to attend. Board members will be present to review, discuss and answer questions that you may have. This will be an opportunity for you to get more acquainted with the DoR and R&R that have been established to keep and increase the value and attractiveness of our community. Refreshments will be served. Hope to see you there.

ACC Corner – Jack Csernecky, Liaison to the Board of Directors

After a short tenure with the ACC, Bill Rose needed to leave because of a family issue. He had volunteered on the ACC before accepting the ACC Chairman position. He was able to adapt quickly to the process and schedule of the ACC. We wish him well.

Joe Rochel, a long-time resident, has accepted the position of ACC Chairman. He comes to us with much experience. He was a builder/supervisor with Beazer homes for many years. We look forward to working with him.

Activities

We are looking into ways of bringing more activities to our members. Rick Griffith has volunteered to help us accomplish this. He is looking for community members to help him. You can reach Rick at GriffithRJ@hotmail.com.

We are looking into the following activities: line dancing, cornhole, bocce, horseshoes, tennis, and pickleball. We are interested in knowing what our members would be interested in participating in.

Rick's plan is to have the first Activities Day on Saturday April 9 at 4:00 p.m. at the Recreation Area. Planned activities for this event are LINE DANCING, CORNHOLE AND BOCCE. Come on out, play some games, have fun, and make new friends. Bring your own drinks, food and lawn chairs. Hope to see you there.

Garden Club Mary Conover

In lieu of a February 9 meeting, we had one of our fundraisers. A fun time was had by all at the POA clubhouse as family and friends came together for a nice catered lunch and an afternoon of cards/games. Many were fortunate in the basket raffle and the money raised will go towards scholarships for Seniors from West Brunswick High School.

Our March 9 meeting will be a presentation on Butterfly Gardening by Jamie Justice, Education Coordinator at the Museum of Coastal Carolina in Ocean Isle.

The Carolina Shores Garden Club is open to anyone who has a desire to enhance their gardening skills and knowledge, or simply enjoys and appreciates the beauty of nature. It is also a great way to meet new friends and socialize.

The Garden Club meets the second Wednesday of the month, September to May, 1:00 p.m. at the POA clubhouse, 17 Lakeview Ct. Dues are $10/year. Please contact Joanne Bendy at 910-575-0071 if you have any questions.

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

stack of books isolated on white backgroundThirteen readers were present and participated in a lively discussion of three diverse novels at our meeting on Friday, February 18. The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides, Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson and Verity by Colleen Hoover were all thought-provoking books that elicited a number of differing thoughts from our members.  As always, we enjoyed our conversation about what we had read and encourage anyone who loves books and is looking to broaden their reading horizons to join us.

Our next meeting will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 18, at the POA clubhouse. Our reading selections for the month are The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri and/or Even as We Breathe by Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle. Those attending may choose to read one or both selections.

Care Team – Flo Pflaster

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/customer-care-team-d-isolated-43443409.jpgWe have many volunteers on the Care Team, ready and willing to help our neighbors with temporary assistance. I will do whatever I can to find someone to help - all you need do is call or email me!

For those of you who have volunteered to help others by being on the Care Team, here is how you make sure you are getting notifications when I post a request:

How to control all email notification settings (including groups)

1.      Log in to nextdoor.com and click your profile picture in the top right corner.

2.      Select Settings from the drop-down.

3.      Select Notifications from the left menu:

4.      Next to Email Notificationsselect Edit

5.      If you set Updates from your local area to None then you will not receive email notifications from your groups.

6.      If you set it to Only top posts or All you will get an email for every new group post. (choose this one)

Note: Adjusting these settings will affect all your email notifications, not just for groups.

If you want to be a part of this team or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know. There are not many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they do get! It really does not take much to volunteer. Help with a small chore at home, an occasional ride, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed. So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I will do my best to find someone.

Thank you,
